Definition
A schema is a mental framework that helps organize and interpret information. It's like a mental file folder where we store knowledge about a particular object, event, or concept. 
Development
Piaget believed that people are born with a few primitive schemas, such as sucking, grasping, and rooting. As people experience things and new information is presented, they develop new schemas and change or modify old ones. 
Processes
Schemas are changed through the processes of assimilation and accommodation: 
Assimilation: Incorporating new information into existing knowledge 
Accommodation: Adjusting schemas to fit new information and events
