The Kerala PSC Lab Assistant Exam is conducted to recruit candidates for the post of Laboratory Assistant in Higher Secondary Schools under the Kerala State Higher Secondary Education Department. It is a promising opportunity for candidates with a 10th standard qualification seeking a stable government job with decent benefits and minimal workload. Here are the details about this post.
The latest notification for the Higher Secondary Lab Assistant Exam (Category No. 447/2023) was released on October 30, 2023. Although the exam was recently conducted, the next notification date has not yet been announced.
A Lab Assistant primarily assists teachers and students in school laboratories. The role involves organizing and maintaining lab equipment, preparing the lab for sessions, and helping students during practicals. Since the job is closely tied to lab periods, the working hours are limited and lighter in comparison to other government jobs. Lab Assistants also enjoy the two-month summer vacation given to schools, effectively making it a 10-month working year.
Educational Qualification
Must have passed the 10th standard (SSLC).
Must pass the "Laboratory Attenders Test" conducted by Kerala PSC, but not necessarily before applying for the Lab Assistant post. This test can be completed later, ideally before the end of the probation period.
Note: Do not be discouraged by the mention of the Laboratory Attenders Test in the notification. If you have passed 10th grade, you are eligible to apply.
Must be between 18 and 36 years as of January 1 of the applying year (born between January 2, 1987, and January 1, 2005 – both dates inclusive).
Age relaxation:
SC/ST candidates: 5 years
OBC candidates: 3 years
The basic pay is ₹24,400 with a scale of ₹24,400 to ₹55,200. Including DA (Dearness Allowance), HRA (House Rent Allowance) and other benefits, the starting gross salary will exceed ₹28,000 per month, offering a stable income from the very beginning of the job.
Promotion opportunities in this role are limited. Even if you acquire higher qualifications later, the chances for promotion to higher designations are rare. However, incremental grade pay increases are possible over time.
Since the Lab Assistant exam is conducted along with other PSC preliminary exams, its syllabus is similar to the LDC (Lower Division Clerk) exam. Once the prelims are cleared with qualifying marks, candidates are shortlisted for the Mains exam, which follows a new syllabus pattern.
