The Government of India Act of 1935 marked the second milestone towards a responsible government in India after the Act of 1919. This Act was passed by the British Government in the year 1935. It was one of the lengthiest Acts at that time as it contained 321 sections and 10 schedules. In the act the subjects under the Federal List were divided into two: Reserved and Transferred. The reserved subjects were controlled by the Governor-General who administered them with the help of three councillors appointed by him. The transferred subjects were administered by the Governor-General with his Council of Ministers (not more than 10). The Governor-General had ‘special powers’ to interfere in the transferred subjects also.
