A person travelled 120 km by steamer, 450 km by train and 60 km by horse. It took him 13 hours 30 minutes. If the speed of the train is 3 times that of the horse and 1.5 times that of the steamer, then what is the speed (in km/h) of the steamer?

A40

B20

C30

D60

Answer:

A. 40

Solution: Given: Travelled 120 km by steamer, 450 km by train and 60 km by horse Total time = 13 hours 30 minutes Speed of train (ST) = 3 × Speed of horse (SH) Speed of train (ST) = 1.5 × Speed of steamer (SSt) Formula used: Time = Distance/Speed Calculation: Let, SH = x km/hr Now, ST = 3x km/hr ST = 1.5 × SSt ⇒ 3x = 1.5 × SSt ⇒ SSt = 2x According to the question, (120/2x) + (450/3x) + (60/x) = [13 + (30/60)] ⇒ (60/x) + (150/x) + (60/x) = (27/2) ⇒ (270/x) = 27/2 ⇒ x = 20 Now, Speed of steamer = SSt = 2x = 20 × 2 = 40 km/hr ∴ The speed of steamer is 40km/hr.
