  • Prof. Henry Edward Armstrong advocated Heuristic method in 1884, by which the pupil was made to find the answer to his problem by his own unaided efforts.

  • The term heuristic has been derived from a Greek word 'heurisco' which means 'to discover' or 'to find out'.

  • Under this method, the pupils are led to 'discover' the facts for themselves with the help of experiments, apparatus or books.

  • Armstrong argued that the spirit of science is original investigation and discovery.

  • Science is not a thing to be talked about but a practical subject and hence the correct way to learn it is 'doing'.

  • The pupils, therefore, are to be put in the position of the original investigator and motivated to discover the scientific principles by himself.

  • The main aim of the Heuristic method is not to teach so much of facts in science, but to teach how facts are collected, systematized and applied.
