Gandhiji and the freedom struggle

• The 3rd phase of the National Movement began with the arrival of Gandhiji. The period between 1919 and 1947, when Gandhiji led the movement, is known as the Gandhian phase.

• After staying in South Africa for many years, Gandhiji returned to India on 9 January 1915 (now observed as Pravasi Bharatiya Divas in India).

• He devised a unique method of non-violent resistance known as Satyagraha. Satyagraha means 'holding truth firmly'. It is founded on the principle of non-violence.
