Wordsworth became Poet Laureate of the United Kingdom on April 6, 1843, following the death of Robert Southey. At this point in his life, he was already a highly respected poet, known for his contributions to the Romantic Movement. However, unlike his predecessors, Wordsworth did not compose official poetry in this role, stating that he had "written enough" and was past his poetic prime.
