The Avarnas were not allowed to use the public roads around the Vaikom temple. The Vaikom Satyagraha in 1924 urged for freedom of movement along these public roads for all sections of the society.
Mannathu Padmanabhan led the famous Savarna Jatha from Vaikom to Thiruvananthapuram on 1 November 1924. They submitted a memorandum to Maharani Sethu Lakshmi Bhai, requesting the opening of all roads of the Vaikom temple to people of all religion and caste.
Gandhiji visited (25) Vaikom to support the Satyagraha.
