History of co-operative movement in India:

  • The British rulers were responsible for the introduction of the legislature.
  • The British rulers did not pay any attention to the problem of the agriculturists, artisans or other persons of limited means.
  • The money lenders exploited the agriculturists by changing high rate of interest.
  • The peasants unrest resulted in agrarian riot.
  • The Deccan riot of 1874 & the in agrarian riot in 1875 in Pune & Ahamednagar took place during the period.
  • Deccan riot in 1874 started against the exploitation of money lenders and it is considered to be an instance which opened the eyes of authorities, towards the miseries of village farmers and Deccan riot commission was formed.


Govt was forced to take certain measure for relieving the poor farmers from the burdens of indebtedness. In order to help the farmers the British govt enacted certain legislations. They include:
