During the debates of the Constituent Assembly, H.V. Kamath proposed that the Preamble of the Indian Constitution should begin with the words “In the name of God.”
However, this suggestion was not accepted because:
India was envisioned as a secular state
The Constitution was meant to reflect popular sovereignty, not divine authority
As a result, the Preamble finally began with:
👉 “We, the people of India…”
Why others are incorrect:
H.C. Mookherjee – Vice-President of the Constituent Assembly, did not make this proposal
K.T. Shah – Proposed several amendments, but not this one
B.N. Rau – Constitutional Advisor, not related to this suggestion
