Motions in Parliament
- Motions in Parliament are formal proposals or suggestions made by Members of Parliament that require a decision from the House.
- They play a crucial role in the functioning of parliamentary proceedings and allow members to raise issues, propose solutions, and express their opinions on various matters.
In the Parliament of India there are broadly three categories of motion:-
1) Substantive Motion
2) Substitute Motion
3) Subsidiary Motion- it is further classified into ancillary motion, supersiding motion and amendment.
Substantive Motions
- A substantive motion is a self-contained proposal that is capable of expressing a decision of the House.
- It is drafted in a way that addresses a specific issue requiring a decision by the parliament.
- For instance, resolutions and other proposals fall under this category.
