Psychosocial theory is a psychological theory that explains how a person's self-understanding, social relationships, and their relationship to society change over their life. The theory is based on the idea that the social and psychological are inseparable, and that the human subject is a "social subject". 

Erik Erikson is the primary theorist associated with psychosocial theory. His theory of psychosocial development states that humans go through eight stages of development, each influenced by psychological and social factors. Erikson believed that social experience is important throughout life, and that each stage is marked by a conflict between a person's psychological needs and their social environment. To develop a healthy personality and become a well-adjusted member of society, a person must successfully resolve these conflicts. 

Some weaknesses of psychosocial theory include the lack of detail on how to resolve conflicts and move from one stage to the next.
