Ananda Shankar (1942-1999) was an Indian musician, composer, and music producer, widely recognized as a pioneer of the Indo-Western fusion genre.
He was the nephew of the legendary sitarist Ravi Shankar and the son of composer and musician Uday Shankar. His musical lineage provided him with a strong foundation in Indian classical music.
Shankar is celebrated for his innovative approach to music, seamlessly blending elements of Indian classical ragas and melodies with Western popular music styles such as jazz, rock, and funk.
His self-titled debut album, Ananda Shankar (1970), featured the globally popular track 'Streets of Calcutta'. This track is a prime example of his fusion style, incorporating sitar with a disco-influenced beat.
