The mechanism that advances the carriage and, in many typewriters, advances the paper to the next line is commonly referred to as the Carriage Return Lever.
This lever, when operated, performs two primary functions:
It moves the carriage (the part holding the paper) back to the right margin.
It activates the line spacing mechanism, advancing the paper upwards to the next line for typing.
