Launched by the Government of India, the NCRMP is a multi-phase project aimed at reducing the vulnerability of coastal communities to cyclones. The project's strategy involves:
Structural Measures: This includes building physical infrastructure such as multipurpose cyclone shelters, coastal embankments, and roads that provide last-mile connectivity for evacuations. These constructions are designed to withstand high winds and storm surges, offering safe havens for people and livestock.
Non-structural Measures: These focus on building capacity and awareness. Key activities include developing early warning systems, conducting public awareness campaigns, and training community volunteers on disaster preparedness and response.
By combining these two approaches, the NCRMP aims to create a more resilient coastal population and minimize the loss of life and property caused by cyclones.
