The Vehicle Location Tracking (VLT) and Emergency Alert System (EAS), commonly known as Dharitri (though this is another project name in Assam), is the mandated system for public service vehicles in Delhi, such as buses, taxis, and auto-rickshaws.
Technology: It is based on Global Positioning System (GPS) and General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) technology, adhering to the national AIS-140 standards.
Components: Each mandated vehicle is fitted with a VLT device and a Panic Button/Emergency Alert Button.
Function:
It enables real-time tracking of the vehicle's location, speed, and movement by a Command & Control Centre.
The Panic Button allows commuters or the driver to send an immediate distress signal to the control centre and the Emergency Response Support System (ERSS) in case of an emergency, enhancing passenger safety.
Management: The system's backend and monitoring centre are managed by government agencies, with the aim of increasing the safety, efficiency, and transparency of public transportation.
