Emily Dickinson was born on December 10, 1830, in Amherst, Massachusetts. She spent most of her life in relative seclusion in the same town. Her family was well-regarded in the area; her father, Edward Dickinson, was a lawyer and served as a U.S. Congressman. The Dickinson Homestead, where she was born, is now a museum dedicated to her life and work.
