Pallava dynasty built the Pancha rathas of Mahabalipuram. This was an Indian dynasty, which ruled a portion of southern India from 275 CE to 897 CE. Since the extinction of the Satavahana dynasty which the Pallavas served as feudatories, they gained prominence. During the reign of Mahendravarman I (571–630 CE), and Narasimhavarman I (630–668 CE) it became a major power. Pallavas built the Shore Temple in Mamallapuram, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. They developed the script for Pallava from which Grantha eventually descended.
