The Ministry of Rural Development, Government of India, is the nodal ministry responsible for the implementation and oversight of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA).
MGNREGA is a flagship program aimed at enhancing livelihood security in rural areas by guaranteeing at least 100 days of wage employment in a financial year to every rural household whose adult members volunteer to do unskilled manual work.
The Act was notified in September 2005 and came into effect from February 2, 2006. It was initially launched in 250 most backward districts of the country.
MGNREGA is implemented by the Gram Panchayats at the village level, with the State Governments playing a key role in its execution and monitoring.
The Ministry of Rural Development provides the overall policy framework, technical support, and financial assistance to the states for the effective implementation of the scheme.
