- Agra Fort is a vast 16th-century fortress made of red sandstone, situated on the banks of the Yamuna River in the historic city of Agra, in west-central Uttar Pradesh.
- It lies approximately 5 km northwest of the world-renowned Taj Mahal and it was constructed on the orders of Emperor Akbar in 1565.
- However, it was during the reign of Akbar's grandson, Shah Jahan, that the fort took on its present form.
- The fort served as the primary residence of the Mughal emperors until 1638, when the capital moved from Agra to Delhi.
