Yakshagana
Yakshagana is a traditional theatre form of Karnataka, popular in districts such as Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Uttara Kannada, Shimoga, and the western parts of Chikmagalur.
It is also well-known in the Kasaragod district of Kerala.
This theatrical style uniquely combines dance, music, dialogue, costume, makeup, and stage techniques to create a distinctive performance form.
Yakshagana is sometimes referred to as Aata or āṭa.
One notable variation is Badagu thittu, which is particularly famous in the Tulu Nadu region.
The performances are based on mythological stories and Puranic tales, with the most popular episodes drawn from the Mahabharata.
Yakshagana performances are traditionally held from dusk till dawn.
Some renowned Yakshagana artists include Siddakatte Chennappa Shetty, Chittani Ramachandra Hegde, Naranappa Uppoor, Balipa Narayana Bhagawat, and Kalinga Navada.
