In the early stages, the Indian National Congress sought moderate reforms, such as expansion of the Legislative Council, reduction of military expenditure, and raising the age limit for candidates in the Public Service Examination.
The demand for complete independence was not initially part of their objectives and became a prominent goal only later, especially after the rise of more assertive leaders and movements within the Congress.
On 19 December 1929, the Indian National Congress passed the historic 'Purna Swaraj' (total independence) resolution at its Lahore session.
Following this, a public declaration was made on 26 January 1930, a day that the Congress urged Indians to celebrate as 'Independence Day.'
