  • In 1922, the farmers of Chauri Chaura village in Uttar Pradesh organized a demonstration against the harsh measures of the British. The police opened fire at the procession of farmers. The angry mob retaliated by burning down the police station, which resulted in the death of 22 policemen. Gandhiji called off the Non-Cooperation Movement completely as the incident violated the principles of non-violent resistance
