Kesari was a highly influential newspaper started in the Marathi language on January 4, 1881.
Alongside Kesari, the English weekly newspaper The Mahratta was also launched on January 2, 1881.
These newspapers were initially founded as a cooperative effort by Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Gopal Ganesh Agarkar, and Vishnushastri Chiplunkar in Pune.
Gopal Ganesh Agarkar served as the first editor of Kesari, and Tilak edited Mahratta. In 1887, due to ideological differences, Agarkar left to start his own journal Sudharak, after which Tilak took full charge as the editor of Kesari.
