Malabar Rebellion
Rebellion The Malabar in 1921 was an anti-British rebellion in Kerala, by the tenants of Malabar against injustice from the landlords and British officials.
This coincided with the NonCooperation Movement and the Khilafat Movement becoming active in Kerala. Gandhiji visited Kerala with Maulana Shaukat Ali.
The annual Congress session was held at Manjeri in 1920.
Majority of the protesting farmers were Mappilas.
The people detained the police who arrived to arrest Vadakkeveettil Muhammed, the then secretary of the Pookkottur Khilafat Committee.
The rumour of arrest of Ali Musliar, a leader of the Khilafat Movement, led to the outbreak of rebellion in the taluks of Eranad, Valluvanad, and Ponnani.
The leaders, Ali Musliar and Varian Kunnath Kunhahammed Haji, were executed by the British
Around 90 fighters who had been arrested in the Mappila Rebellion were dispatched from Tirur railway station to Coimbatore, stuffed in a goods wagon without air to breathe. When the wagon reached Podanur near Coimbatore, 72 had died and the rest were struggling to stay alive. This is known as the Wagon Tragedy of 10 November 1921.
