Palakkad is the city where the First Lodge of the Theosophical Society was started in Kerala.
After the headquarters were shifted from New York to Bombay in 1879, the activities of the Theosophical Society became active in India and by 1883, branches were started in various parts of India.
The branch in Palakkad was named 'Palghat Lodge'.
The Theosophical Society was founded by Madame H. P. Blavatsky and Colonel H. S. Olcott. In 1882, its headquarters were shifted to Adyar near Madras.
This movement has contributed to the socio-cultural renaissance of Kerala to some extent.
