The International Co-operative Alliance (ICA) carried out three main stages in the evolution of co-operative principles:
Initial stage – Rochdale Pioneers (1844): Establishment of basic cooperative principles.
Early ICA reformulation: Standardization of principles for international application.
Karve Committee and subsequent ICA refinements (1992–1995): Modernization and revision to suit global cooperative practices, culminating in the 1995 ICA Statement on Co-operative Identity.
