- The temple was constructed in 1026-27 CE during the reign of Bhima I of the Solanki dynasty and is now a protected monument managed by the Archaeological Survey of India.
- The temple complex consists of three main parts:
Gudhamandapa, the shrine hall,
Sabhamandapa, the assembly hall, and
Kunda, the reservoir.
- It is believed that the temple was built to honor Bhima I’s defense of Modhera against Mahmud of Ghazni.
- The temple complex is designed in the Maru-Gurjara style, also referred to as the Solanki style.
- It is known for its exquisite carvings, the temple and the beautifully sculpted kund are prime examples of the remarkable masonry from the Solanki period, which is often regarded as the Golden Age of Gujarat.
