Contemporary developmental psychologists believe that human development is the result of both nature and nurture:
Nature: The influence of biological factors, such as genetics, on a person's psychology
Nurture: The influence of the environment on a person's psychology
Developmental psychologists study how humans grow, change, and adapt throughout their lives. They examine how thinking, feeling, and behaviors change across three major dimensions: physical development, cognitive development, and social emotional development.
Developmental psychologists also consider how personal characteristics, behavior, and environmental factors interact. For example, they study how the social context and built environment influence development.
The field of developmental psychology began with a focus on child development, but has since expanded to include adolescence, adult development, aging, and the entire lifespan.
