Shanar Agitation (also widely known as the Channar Revolt or Melmundu Samaram).
The historic royal proclamation issued on July 26, 1859, by Maharaja Uthram Thirunal Marthanda Varma of Travancore granted Channar (Shanar) women the legal right to wear upper garments to cover their chests, bringing a major legal victory to their decades-long, fierce struggle for dignity and social equality.
