• The Planning Commission of India, which was the central body responsible for formulating Five-Year Plans and guiding the country’s economic policy after independence, was replaced by a new institution called NITI Aayog (National Institution for Transforming India). The change was announced by the Government of India in 2014 and NITI Aayog was established on 1 January 2015 to promote cooperative federalism, provide strategic and technical advice to the central and state governments, and act as a policy think tank rather than a centralized planning authority like the old Commission.
