•         Shelly was born in Sussex, England and was the son of rich landowner.

•         He was educated at Eton and University college Oxford.

•         At school he was bullied as 'Mad Shelley' and the 'Eton Atheist' (because of his Inde- pendent spirit)

•         At university college, oxford, he continued to read radical authors and adopted eccen- tric dress and behaviours

•         In March 1811, he was expelled for circulating a pamphlet, 'The Necessity of Atheism', written with his friend T.J. Hogg. His father disowned him for the same reason.
