According to the World Health Organization (WHO), medicinal plants play a pivotal role in developing countries, where more than 80% of the rural population uses nearby accessible medicinal plants for their primary medical needs.
Most of the country's medicinal plants are found in forest habitats. Only 10% of the medicinal plants are distributed among open grass-lands, agricultural pastures and in and around fresh water bodies etc.
There are a large number of medicinal plant species in India, with concentrated spots in the region of Eastern Himalayas, Western Ghats and Andaman & Nicobar Island.
National Medicinal Plants Board (NMPB) of Ministry of AYUSH has been implementing the Central Sector Scheme for Conservation, Development and Sustainable Management of Medicinal Plants.
