Constitutional Basis
Article 324: Provides for Election Commission to direct, control, and conduct elections.
Part XV (Articles 324–329) deals with elections.
Ensures free and fair elections to Parliament, State Legislatures, President, and Vice President.
Composition
Originally : One Chief Election Commissioner (CEC).
Since 1989 : Multi-member body → CEC + up to two Election Commissioners.
Current : CEC + 2 Election Commissioners.
Appointed by: President of India.
Tenure: 6 years or till 65 years of age

Conduct Elections:
Lok Sabha, Rajya Sabha, State Legislative Assemblies & Councils.
Offices of President & Vice-President.
Supervisory Powers:
Prepares and revises electoral rolls.
Grants recognition to political parties.
Allots election symbols.
Monitors Model Code of Conduct.
