The Rome Statute, adopted on July 17, 1998, serves as the founding treaty of the International Criminal Court and entered into force on July 1, 2002.
The Court's jurisdiction is limited to the most serious crimes of concern to the international community as a whole. According to Article 5 of the Rome Statute, these crimes are:
