- Bahubali, also known as Gomateshwara, was the second son of the first Jain Tirthankara, Rishabdeva (or Adinath).
- According to legend, Adinath had an astonishing 100 sons.
- When Rishabdeva left his kingdom, a conflict arose between his sons Bharatha and Bahubali over the dominion.
- Although Bahubali defeated Bharatha in battle, their rivalry persisted.
- It was ultimately decided that Bahubali would renounce his kingdom in exchange for attaining Kevala Jnana, for the sake of Bharatha.
