The Global Peace Index is an annual report published by the Institute for Economics & Peace (IEP).
It ranks countries based on their level of peacefulness.
Since 2008, the GPI indicates a general deterioration in two key areas: Ongoing Conflict and Safety & Security.
This suggests an increase in internal and external conflicts, as well as a decline in the general sense of safety and security experienced by populations worldwide.
Conversely, the index shows an improvement in the Militarisation indicator.
This implies that countries have, on average, reduced their military expenditure, armed personnel, and arms imports/exports, or other factors related to militarisation have decreased.
These trends highlight a complex global security landscape where certain aspects of peace are declining while others are improving.
It is important to note that the GPI assesses peace across three domains: a peaceful society (including safety & security and ongoing conflict), a safe and secure society, and a domestically and internationally involved society (including militarisation).
