Ubisch bodies, also called orbicules, are tiny acellular structures composed mainly of sporopollenin. They originate in the tapetal cells, which form the innermost layer of the anther wall. These bodies are located on or are studded in the tapetal membrane and play a key role in the development of the pollen grain wall, specifically by helping to form the exine, the outer protective layer of pollen grains.
